I guess you can say I’m the guest blogger today. My daughter and I own the shoppe together and today I wanted to share our love of “Old World Ornaments” and why we began carrying this beautiful line of ornaments in our shoppe.
It’s a given that Old World Christmas Ornaments have the widest selection of mouth-blown, hand-painted glass ornaments in the industry. They are ranked #1 in the United States market in customer satisfaction by a independent market research, however there is so much more to the story. Some of you may know our story but for those that don’t I’ll explain…
My sister and I owned a small gift shop back in the 80’s, Country Crossroads. Throughout its’ history we always carried the Old World Christmas Ornaments. Each ornament has its’ own little story that kindles childhood memories, as well as, good times and great friendships. At Country Crossroads we had a wonderful staff of strong, caring women that would come together at the holidays to “dress” the shop. We couldn’t wait to unpack the ornaments. Those memories are dear to me, as well as the friendships we still maintain.
After we closed the shop and fast forward a number of years, five of us came together in 1999 for dinner and to celebrate the holidays. At our dinner we created our “Old World” ornament exchange. The following year we were excited to see our vision come together with our first five categories which were: Snowmen, Flowers, Fruits & Veggies, Santas, and Miscellaneous. Every year we each bought five of the same ornament to exchange and each year we took home five different ornaments for our tree. After dinner and dessert we anxiously opened our ornaments and then we drew a new category for the following year. The hunt for the ornament began the day after our get together! The hunt is almost as much fun as the camaraderie we share. We even had a little side competition for the best ‘presentation’. We have so much fun each year catching up on life and telling stories about our “finds”. It got such a big deal that our family and friends couldn’t wait to hear all about it or see our new ornaments from the exchange. Thank goodness for our cell phones now as we can snap them all a photo immediately! LOL
Over the years we have had over 17 different categories (some get repeated each year) and a gazillion laughs. Our collection has grown to over 90 ornaments and we still continue to this day! While I am writing this post, I am very excited and eager for our get together this Sunday!
Our ornament exchange has brought us much more than ornaments. It is a way of staying connected with friends. We love sharing our concept. If anyone ever wants more information on how to start your own exchange, just stop in the shop.
Happy Holidays to you and your family. Do you have a special tradition? If so, leave a comment and share! We would love to hear about it!
